It’s not often that the front page of the Daily Mail (along with a large photo of the usually irrelevant George Carey, former ABofC) makes me smile. But the words “Chucrh ‘is on the Brink of Extinction’: Ex-Archbishop George Carey warns of Christianity Crisis” certainly did this morning!
Apparently the Church of England, with its declining numbers, declining and ageing congregations is one generation away from extinction – GOOD!
He lays the blame at the feet of church leaders. But actually I don’t think this is the case. With access to factual information about the world the claims of the churches are not being accepted by many many of the younger (and older!) generation these days. They realise that they are not true and that faith is not a vaild lens through which to look at the world.
Yes, it’s attitude towards the LGBT community and women certainly hasn’t helped but the genie of truth is now so far out of the bottle that I think (or at least, hope) that this decline will continue, and we at Atheism UK will do our best to help it continue!
